On September 9 Apple showed a number a lot of people are about to care about: Health Age, "years above or below your chronological age," living in a new Longevity tab of the redesigned Health app. It is coming late 2026. Zone2AI has shown a Fitness Age since this month. They are not the same number, and the difference is the useful part.
Per Apple, Health Age combines data from your Apple Watch such as VO2 max, heart rate variability and sleep, with optional lab results you add yourself, and shows "which factors are adding years and which ones are taking them off," with "personalized guidance powered by Apple Intelligence." In the United States you will be able to order a Quest blood panel with more than fifty biomarkers for $119 straight from the Health app. It requires an Apple Watch and an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone, is for people 18 and over, and Apple labels it wellness, not medical.
That is a broad longevity composite. Sleep, stress, blood lipids and cardio fitness all feed one gauge, and the output is a list of habits.
Zone2AI's Fitness Age is narrower on purpose. It is an estimate of the age at which your VO2 max would be the median value for your sex, read from the same reference set ACSM's guidelines use, and then adjusted by three things the app already measures about you: your resting heart rate against the norm for your age, how fast your heart recovers after hard efforts, and how many of the last eight weeks you actually hit your Zone 2 goal. Your birthday moves the gap; it never moves the fitness age itself.
The difference in one line: Apple's number tells you where you stand. Zone2AI's number comes with the one protocol that moves it, a projection for six weeks and six months, and a verdict on every session that says whether you did the work.
Inputs. Apple: VO2 max, HRV, sleep, optional labs. Zone2AI: VO2 max, resting heart rate, heart-rate recovery, your Zone 2 consistency.
What you get told. Apple: the factors and habits behind the number. Zone2AI: your level's Zone 2 minutes and sprints for this week, what each session earned, and how the number is projected to move if you keep the plan.
Who can see it. Apple: an Apple Watch plus an Apple Intelligence iPhone, late 2026. Zone2AI: any iPhone the app runs on, with an Apple Watch or a Garmin, today.
Direction of honesty. Both are estimates and both say so. Zone2AI's moves at most two years a week, so one hot run cannot rewrite your history, and it never defaults to the male reference table when it does not know your sex.

Try Zone2AI Free →Of everything that goes into a longevity composite, VO2 max is the one with the steepest relationship to how long and how well you live, and it is also the one you can move fastest with a specific, boring protocol: most of your cardio at a genuinely easy intensity, a little of it very hard. That is Zone 2 plus sprints. Six months on the plan projects a real change in the number, which is why Zone2AI shows the projection next to the age instead of a gauge on its own.
When Health Age arrives, use it. It is a good dashboard and the lab panel is a bargain. Then open Zone2AI to see the lever. Apple will tell you your age. Zone 2 is how you take years off it, and the app checks every session that you did. Look good naked again.
